Manipur’s Iron Lady launches political party

IMPHAL: Signalling her intention to contest the upcoming state elections, Irom Chanu Sharmila has floated a new political party. Two months after she broke her 16-year-long hunger strike, the Iron Lady of Manipur has launched People Resurgence and Justice Alliance.

The party, whose formation was announced at a press conference on Tuesday, is likely to contest in the forthcoming Assembly elections, slated for the first quarter of 2017.

Sharmila, 44, came into prominence for her 16-year-long hunger strike demanding the removal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), a group of Acts that grant extraordinary powers to the Forces in what are deemed to be disturbed areas. Sharmila, who began the fast on November 2, 2000, finally called it off on August 9.

In an interview to Manipur-based newspaper The Sangai Express yesterday, Irom Sharmila said she was launching the party on October 18 as “it was on this day in 1948 that the first session of the democratically elected Manipur Legislative assembly was held before Manipur was merged into the Indian Union”. She added her party will fight for justice for all and bring change through non-violent means.
